Proposals were gathered for a new Nature and Wellbeing Centre at Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve. The building is to serve as the flagship visitor centre for Kent Wildlife Trust.
The Centre will be very unique, fostering a greater understanding of wildlife, sustainability and care for the planet as well as promoting a relationship between nature and wellbeing through exhibitions, lectures, workshops and therapies. The building brief required exhibition spaces, a lecture room, cafe, shop and staff area.
The modern form of the building took inspiration from the fungus that can be found at the reserve, this contrasts with the traditional materials that are used. The facade of the proposal is clad in flint in various configurations which echoes vernacular construction and cladding techniques found in the area.
Sustainable features include a green roof, rainwater harvesting to flush toilets, low energy lighting, high performance glazing and using ground source heat pumps to harness the Earth's geothermal resources to help with the heating of the building.
